Done Your Lawn Mower Maintenance Yet?

Trying to start your lawn mower after a long winter can be very frustrating so you should read our advices. Performing a few routine maintenance tasks before you store your lawn mower for the winter can save you time in the spring, prolong the life of your lawn mower, and save you money over the long run.

Even if you have already put your lawn mower into storage for the winter, a few simple maintenance tasks performed before starting your lawn mower in the spring can be very beneficial.
Wash and dry your lawn mower after the mowing season is over.

A power blower can be very helpful in removing grass and debris from the underside of your lawn mower and other hard to reach areas. If your lawn mower engine is air-cooled, use a stick or wooden dowel to remove any residue from the cooling fins. If you have a lawn mower with a water-cooled engine, check the coolant level and fill the reservoir if needed.

Clean the radiator cooling fins with a strong jet of water. You should also drain the fuel tank and replace the fuel filter. The air filter housing should be cleaned and the air filter replaced.
Remember to check the spark plug(s) for corrosion and wear.

Don’t attempt to clean the spark plug if it is showing some wear. It is cheap and easy to replace the spark plug. Be sure to remove any debris before removing the spark plug and by using a bit of anti-seize compound when you replace the old spark plug, you will ensure easier removal next year. Clean and lubricate the throttle linkages and the choke, and apply grease to the mower deck and all the fittings.

This will be easier if you remove the mower deck and you can sharpen the blades while the mower deck is off. Sharpening the blades after each mowing season will give you a better cut next year and save you the trouble of having to sharpen them in the spring.

Clean the battery terminals and replace your old lawn mower battery if necessary. You can help prevent corrosion of the terminals if you apply grease to the posts at the end of each mowing season. Change the oil in the engine crankcase and replace the oil filter.

You should also drain the gas from your lawn mower before storing it for the winter. During the long summer mowing season, remember to wash your lawn mower and remove any debris after the mower has cooled. Keeping your lawn mower clean will add years to its life and make routine maintenance tasks a lot easier.
Lawn mowing is a job most of us face each and every year.

A lawn mower that runs great and is well maintained will make this job more enjoyable and easier all summer long. A yearly check up for your lawn mower is the perfect way to prolong its life and keep it running like new, and your lawn will look great when you mow with a machine that is in top working condition.

Your lawn mower will perform at the highest level possible if you remember to perform these simple maintenance tasks each and every year. During the summer months periodically check the oil and the condition of the air and fuel filters. You will save money and your lawn mower will work great for years to come.

Having a Beautiful Lawn isn’t Much of a Secret at All

Actually, having a beautiful lawn isn’t much of a secret at all. Here’s how it works:

1. Plant the right type of grass for your area
2. Use the proper fertilizer as directed a couple of times a year
3. Keep well watered during the growing season
4. Never mow shorter than 1/3rd the present heigth

Select grass seeds that grow well in your area.

Being a native Southern Californian, I was very partial to a Dichondra lawn. Imagine my surprise upon moving to Oregon to learn it simply wasn’t possible to have a Dichondra lawn in Oregon due to the colder winters. Plants and seeds are available by catalog according to the zone you live in.

Proper Fertilazation

In order to have a lush, healthy lawn you are going to have to feed it with the proper nutrients. You will find the right fertilizer for your lawn at your local garden store. Follow the simple directions and you are good to go. Fertilizer is available in both liquid and dry form. I have had good luck with both. A word of caution. When it comes to fertilizer, more is NOT better. At best, over fertilizing will burn your lawn.

As to how much water your lawn needs varies somewhat depending on grass type. In general, applying one inch of water per week is the recommendation when there is insufficient rainfall during summer drought. An inch of water can be measured by marking the side of a tuna or pet food can placed in the lawn. The best time of day to water your lawn is in the early morning hours. If using a timer, try setting it for 2 hours a day, 3 days a week or every other day.

For a healthy lawn, never cut more than one-third of the grass blade in any one mowing. If the grass gets ahead of you because of a busy schedule, move up the cutting height of your mower to the highest setting. Catch the cuttings with a bagging unit, rake the lawn with a leaf rake, or use a mulching blade. Then move the cutting height back to normal and cut the lawn again a few days later.

For more information on planting and maintaining a beautiful lawn, look for a good book on the subject in your local garden supply store.

How to Make Sure Grubs Don’t Destroy Your Lawn

What are grubs?

White grubs are the larval stage of beetles and are the most widespread turf grass pests in the United States. In fact, there are a number of different types of grubs that can damage your lawn. A single grub is usually less than 1 inch in length and usually curled into a C-shape when exposed. However, just 10 grubs in a square foot of grass can permanently damage a healthy lawn because grubs feed on grass roots. In fact, there may be several types of grubs within a single patch of infested grass.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Americans spend $156 million each year replacing the lawns that grubs destroy. And if you add up the total loss grubs cause throughout their lifecycle, the USDA estimates a staggering $460 million a year in damage.

Have grubs invaded your lawn? Here are some ways to tell if you have grubs in your lawn:

* There are irregular brown patches in your lawn that don’t go away with watering.

* You can easily pull up infested sections of your lawn like a rug.

* There are a large number of birds in your yard. Birds eat grubs.

* Evidence of moles, skunks, or raccoons, which feed on grubs, is apparent.

You can fight back. Bayer Advanced Lawn Season-Long Grub Control, containing the proprietary active ingredient Merit, is proven to kill more grubs – guaranteed. It works effectively against all the common grub types that are found in lawns. Simply apply and water in to form a protective zone in the soil against grubs all season long with a single application.

But if your lawn is already under attack by an active grub infestation, Bayer Advanced Lawn 24-Hour Grub Control provides quick relief. It contains the proprietary active ingredient Dylox, which works faster than any other grub killer on the market. In fact, grubs usually stop feeding and start to die within 24 hours. It also kills sod webworms, mole crickets and cutworms.

Hire Someone To Care For Your Lawn

Lawn care is a very important aspect of home maintenance. Lawns need to be regularly mowed, weeded, edged, controlled for pests, and fertilized to ensure a beautiful compliment to your home. Often the amount of time needed to properly care for a lawn can be extensive. With today’s busy schedules, people often don’t have the time to care for their yard properly. Using a lawn care service is an inexpensive way to keep the yard looking nice without taking up all your free time.

There are several types of lawn care services from large professional organizations to the neighborhood kid making a few extra dollars. Who to choose will depend on the size of your lawn and what type of maintenance you’ll need. For weekly or bi weekly lawn trimmings, it is quite acceptable to choose someone at a budget price. If you are looking for more intense upkeep, look for a company that has a lot of experience in professional landscape maintenance.

Most people who opt for using a neighbor to do their regular lawn upkeep will not ask for a service contract. For this type of work, it is not necessary and even if they don’t show up, you can get another person or a professional service in without too much hassle. Make sure though, that you pay after the work is completed so you can inspect the job and ensure quality work. You may need to occasionally hire a professional to do some more sophisticated things like pest control or landscaping.

If hiring a professional lawn service company, there are several things you should look for. Ensure they have experience in and the ability to do full service lawn care. This would include mowing, weeding, edging and fertilizing. They may also provide services such as pest control, seeding and landscape design. Choose only the services you will need on a regular basis and obtain quotes for additional items as necessary.

Most services will give you a maintenance contract that will outline the days they will come, how often they will provide service, and what services are included. These are generally done on a monthly basis for a set fee. Find out how to cancel your service and what steps need to be taken to ensure you are able to easily change if needed. Ask for and get proof of insurance. In case the company damages your lawn, you want to be sure you are covered. Check how long they have been in business, and if they have referrals check them.

A lawn care service can be an affordable way to maintain your lawn while allowing you to spend free time enjoying yourself instead of working in the yard. The best way to find a new service provider is to ask friends, family and neighbors for a recommendation. Many providers will give a discount if they are already working in the same neighborhood, so be sure to ask when you see a service provider at your neighbor’s yard.

Lawn Care FAQ

Q: How often should I cut my lawn?
A: As part of quality lawn care, regular cutting with a mower should be observed and the grass should be cut to an even height. Cutting your lawn once per week should be sufficient.

Q: What is the purpose of raking my lawn?
A: This is commonly done in order to remove dead grass. Many people only rake their lawn in the fall as the leaves begin to cover their yard, but a part of effective lawn care requires that lawns by raked during other seasons as well.

Q: Does lawn care require that I water my lawn?
A: Not everyone does this, but it is recommended that lawns be watered in order to avoid having the grass to dry up and turn brown. If this happens, you could be left with brown spots in your yard.

Q: I have a dog and he is reeking havoc on the yard. How can I replant my lawn with success?
A: Dogs and lawn care are not the best match, but they can work together. When you replant your lawn, consider using seeds that are specifically designed for high traffic areas. Other factors that may worsen the effect that your dog is having on the lawn may include a chain dragging the grass and exposing the dirt surface below or if your dog is prone to digging.

Q: Should I use harsh chemicals on my lawn in order to rid it of pests and insects?
A: Many experts agree that this is a bad idea for several reasons. If you have children who play in the yard, this may be unhealthy for them. The same is true of pets, who make it a habit of digging or even eating grass at times. In addition, harsh chemicals often do more harm than good to your lawn and are certainly no friend of the environment. Instead, try a bug light or other means of ridding your lawn of insects and other pests.

Lawn care is a very big industry, which services millions of people every year. Whether you do not have the time to care for the lawn yourself or simply aren’t up to the task, there are a number of landscaping experts that are readily available to help with lawn care needs. These are commonly found in the yellow pages under ‘Landscaping’ and most businesses can provide you with an instant quote over the telephone if you have detailed information regarding your specific lawn care needs.

Is A Robotic Lawn Mower Right For You?

If you have ever wondered what type of lawn mower is best for you, read on. Learn which type of mower will be perfect for mowing around your garden or for mowing around your large land area. First, you need to evaluate what you will be using your lawn mower for. You should always go with a known brand, like a Toro or John Deere, as these have been awarded many times as being manufacturer of the year.

Which mower should you choose that will best suit your needs? One of the best brands of mower out today, is John Deere. These green power tools come in a wide selection and each is for many different purposes. If you plan to cultivate your own land for growing food, they have a special model just for that.

Also, the type of grass you are planning to cut should also be a factor when choosing the type of lawn mower you are going to buy. A John Deere Utility lawn tractor is perfect for those who have a yard larger than most. This mower will be able to provide you with the power and reliability that only lawn tractors can give.

A new model of lawn mower’s are the robotic lawn mowers which come equipped with a sonar detection system that will automatically slow down when it senses an object close by. These new sonar detection systems will also stop the lawn mower’s blades before they cut into the object. If you have small children or pets who like to leave objects around the yard, this is the best idea for you. Also, some of the robotic lawn mowers have touch sensors on them. These touch sensors are able to change the direction of the mower’s blades when they feel on object, other than grass of course, and will keep the object from being run over. These new detection systems make it very unlikely for any lawn mower related injuries to happen.

A big reason why the sonar detection systems were created was to make sure no pets get hurt because of a lawn mower. Since the detection systems were put on to some of the models, no incidents of injuries have been reported. Dogs have a natural inclination to bark and chase a moving object that makes noise. There is a better chance of your dog attacking these robotic lawn mowers than it is for a robotic lawn mower to hurt your family dog.

Another reason why so many people have opted to go with the robotic lawn mowers is because they move at a relatively slow pace, when compared to normal mowers, and it give people and/or pets the time to move out of the way. Even though it might take you a little longer to mow your lawn, it will help keep the seventy-two thousand lawn mower accidents a year from rising.

Safety For Riding Lawn Tractors

Lawn tractors are probably the most powerful tool you might offer to any garden. They are the best solution for advanced landscapers. Lawn tractors will help those people who don’t have much time to take care of their large lawns. Among many other features, they are reliable, efficient, extremely fast as well as really easy to drive, getting a lot of fun while working, what else do you need?. Nevertheless, not everything is gold what it shines; they can be double-edge weapons for those who don’t respect the safety requirements. A lawn tractor is a dangerous equipment, so use it consciously and following the manual’s operator.

Every gardener driving a lawn tractor is concerned about safety. But, most homeowners don’t take enough time to notice how risky might be a lawn tractor. It is obvious the indestructible feelings that you feel when driving a large lawn tractor. You are there, sitting on top of a extremely powerful machine which responds to your orders instantly. However, there are many things, not desired, that can happen very quickly, putting you as operator and others in a terrible danger. Statistics out there say that year after year, many people experience lawn tractors accidents due to either an incorrect or unsafely use.

Here you have some important points to have in mind when driving a lawn tractor:

Clear the mowing area from objects that could avoid a fluent work. This is a very important premise that most homeowners forget. It might happen to run over a small piece of metal or hardwood. This will risk you to send the piece in question out the side of the lawn tractor, and therefore injure anyone within hundred feet around the operator.

Wear always safety wear when operating power tools. Thick shoes can save your feet, if they get close to the lawn tractor’s sharpen blades. And wearing goggles is as simple as protect your eyes from flying insects direct impacts.

No matter what they say, you must keep safety shields in place on the tractor. You never know when these guards will be required.

Influence Of Lawn Tractors Driving Experience

You, as an experienced lawn tractor driver, might be thinking on the years of experience you’ve got over the years. Despite your great driver skills and how conscientious you feel on the tractor, you never must trust on machines and should be aware all the time. At lawn mowers and garden tractors, we try to become aware of all gardening tools, because we know how important is the safety throughout your garden for you and your family.

What are the most typical mistakes when operating a lawn tractor? As we have said above, not cleaning the mowing area can be quite dangerous, but there is no choice when the lawn tractor blades are exposed. Try to use blades guards in order to decrease the cutting risk when operating those tractors designs, whose mowing blades are totally exposed. Landscapers always think that anything can happen to them, because they know everything relating to lawn mowers and garden tractors. Please, be as careful as you can, especially when riding a tractor on an incline. It might tip over and therefore creating the chance of blades falling down over you., it could happen, why not? Most mower and tractor manufacturers are designing currently machines with the weight evenly distributed. This will avoid the tipping over easily.

One sentence we want to insert into gardeners’ minds is : The more prepared you are for any kind of circumstance concerning accidents and safety, the better off you will be. Just remember to wear lawn tractors safety equipment, including goggles, thick shoes and gloves if necessary. If you ignore one of the small safety details when riding these machines, you could end up reproaching yourself why did not you do it. Gardening injuries are as typical as many others and lawn tractors are not a child’s game.

Make Sure You Choose The Right Type Of Lawn Mower

Do you like to have a beautiful lawn in your yard? Clean, green and well mowed lawn is not just everybody’s dream but also is pretty much pleasing. You can engage a lawn mowing service for a fee but how about doing it yourself over the weekend? You need to know what type of lawn mower suffices your need and how much you should spend on it etc before you bought one for your home.

Choosing the Right Type of Lawn Mower

Before you chose a lawn mower, decide whether you want to buy electric or gasoline driven mower. Each type has its own ups and downs. In general you may follow the points as given below.

1. Base your decision on the area to mow. Larger the area bigger is the mower you may want to purchase. You can consider even the non powered mower for small lawns.

2. If your lawn is small and the farthest edge is about 30 to 35 feet away from your nearest power socket you can very well go for an electric lawn mower.

3. If it is for large gardens or golf courses go for ride-on models powered by diesel or gas engines with controls on both the hands. Even a garden tractor suffices for you. Engine power varies from 8.5 HP to 13 HP and the price from $1750 to $5000.

4. Price is an important factor to look at. A basic walk-behind model costs about $400 and for a little more you get a better engine with ball bearing and utility handle bars. Higher prices like $700 to $900 get you self starting, self propelled models with additional features.

5. For sloped small lawns a Hover model suits best. They are light and easy, you need to carry them to lawn and start. They come in both diesel and electric versions.

How Do You Want To Mow Your Lawn

Summer: Raise the mower to 3 inches or more to cut grass long. Mowing once in a fortnight may be enough depending on watering and soil condition.

Spring: Sharpen and service the mower before getting started. Only top-dressing must give the lawn a beautiful look.

Winter: Drain gas from the lawn mower and store it covered in your garage.

Automatic Lawn Mowers

The benefits of robot mowers are numerous. You don’t have to push or ride a mower to get your lawn mowed, you don’t have to deal with clippings, you free up some of your precious weekend time, and the mulch it creates is a healthy alternative to your lawn over fertilizer.
